Owner Nancy Christy is a native of New York, attended college in Ohio and began her career in restaurant work in 1972 in Madison.
With partner Andrea Craig, Christy started the acclaimed Wilson Street Grill in 1987. She established Meaningful People, Places and Foods in 2002.

In early 2005, staff at Porchlight, Inc., came up with the idea that a food project could solve practical issues for their organization which provides emergency shelter, food, employment services, counseling, and affordable housing.
